Forging Futures: Edge Links Students with Supercar Engineers

In an exciting blend of engineering excellence and youth empowerment, Julie Edge MHK, then Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, hosted an unforgettable event that brought top McLaren Automotive engineers face-to-face with the next generation of innovators.

The event, held during National Apprenticeship Week, gave students at University College Isle of Man a rare opportunity to meet with three engineers from the supercar manufacturer—including a former UCM student who is now thriving in a cutting-edge career at McLaren.

“This is what opportunity looks like,” said Edge. “We are showing our young people that world-class careers are within their reach—right here from the Isle of Man.”

Bridging Education and Industry

Edge’s initiative highlighted her ongoing mission to link education with real-world industry experience, ensuring that young people are equipped not only with qualifications but with inspiration and a pathway to success.

Key elements of the event included:

  • Live demonstrations and talks from McLaren engineers about design, testing and automotive innovation
  • One-to-one discussions with students about apprenticeships, training routes, and day-to-day engineering work
  • Insights into STEM careers, including mechanical design, digital manufacturing, and performance engineering

The appearance of a Manx-born engineer working at McLaren served as a powerful example of what can be achieved through education, ambition, and local support.

Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

The event was one of several spearheaded by Edge during National Apprenticeship Week 2024, a nationwide campaign celebrating vocational training, practical learning, and employer partnerships.

“Apprenticeships are the backbone of future industry,” said Edge. “They give students the chance to earn, learn, and contribute from day one. And they provide our island with the skills it needs to grow.”

Edge encouraged students across the Isle of Man to explore technical education options, attend apprenticeship events, and begin mapping their journeys towards fulfilling, high-value careers.

Inspiring the Engineers of Tomorrow

This event underscored Edge’s belief that education should open doors—not limit them. By connecting students with professionals from one of the world’s most respected automotive brands, she helped spark ambition, raise aspirations, and reinforce her government’s focus on STEM, innovation, and real-life relevance in education. From supercars to software, Edge has consistently worked to ensure that every student has access to opportunities that match their passion and potential.
