Tynwald members have criticised the depth of reforms following the Dr Rosalind Ranson tribunal.

Members approved the Council of Ministers’ final response to the review of the government’s handling of the employment tribunal case, but not before criticising the substance of the proposed changes.

Chief Minister Alf Cannan moved the motion, stating the government had accepted all 24 recommendations from Richard Wright KC’s review and that “in many cases, they have been implemented already.”

However, Onchan MHK Julie Edge said the response prompted “further questions rather than give me reassurance”.

She argued: “Much of the response in this report relies on self certification, and that’s the same system that failed.”

Attorney General Walter Wannenburgh defended his chambers’ work, stating, “If there is any suggestion therefore that chambers has not acted upon the recommendations made of it by Mr. Wright, then I believe that is misplaced. I go further and say that it is wrong.”

Liberal Vannin leader Lawrie Hooper highlighted a “disconnect between we’ve done it and what the commentary says,” while former minister Rob Callister asked whether an independent legal firm should have been appointed.

In reply, Chief Minister Cannan promised written answers to detailed questions and a further update in April. The motion was carried.
